Installation & setup

Record Compare respects each user's existing Salesforce access. Installing or configuring Record Compare does not grant additional access to Salesforce objects, fields, or records.

1

Install Record Compare

Record Compare is distributed as a Salesforce managed package.

  1. Open the installation link provided by Toolkyt.
  2. Select the Salesforce organization where Record Compare should be installed.
  3. When prompted for installation access, Install for Admins Only is recommended initially.
  4. Complete the Salesforce installation process.
  5. Wait for confirmation that the package installation has completed.
After installation, access can be assigned to additional users through the packaged permission set.
2

Assign Record Compare access

To give users access to Record Compare:

  1. Open Salesforce Setup.
  2. Search for Permission Sets.
  3. Open Toolkyt Record Compare.
  4. Select Manage Assignments.
  5. Select Add Assignments.
  6. Choose the users who should have access.
  7. Complete the assignment.
The permission set provides access to the application functionality. It does not grant additional access to your organization's Salesforce data — each user's existing object permissions, field-level security, record access, and sharing rules continue to apply.
3

Add Record Compare to the Utility Bar

The Utility Bar is the recommended way to provide contextual access to Record Compare while users work in Salesforce. Configuration is performed per Lightning app.

  1. From Setup, open App Manager.
  2. Find the Lightning app where users should access Record Compare.
  3. Select Edit.
  4. Open Utility Items (Desktop Only).
  5. Select Add Utility Item.
  6. Select Record Compare.
  7. Configure the recommended panel dimensions — width 700 px, height 550 px.
  8. Save the Lightning app.
Repeat these steps for each Lightning app where Record Compare should be available.
4

Use Record Compare from the Utility Bar

Open a Salesforce record from a Lightning app where the Record Compare Utility has been configured, then select Record Compare from the Utility Bar. Three options are available:

  • Compare Records — compares the current record with another eligible record. The current record becomes the starting record for the comparison.
  • Compare Related Records — select an available related-record relationship and compare two eligible related records within the current record's context.
  • Open Record Compare App — opens the full Record Compare workspace. The Utility automatically minimizes when the full workspace opens.
Record Compare automatically detects the current Salesforce record context when available.
5

Use the full Record Compare workspace

Record Compare includes a dedicated Salesforce tab for comparisons that don't need to begin from the current record. Users with the appropriate permission can access it through the Salesforce App Launcher, or from a Lightning app where the tab has been added to navigation.

The workspace follows a simple workflow: Object → Record 1 → Record 2 → Compare.

The full workspace does not require Utility Bar or Quick Action configuration.
6

Add record-page Quick Actions

Optional

Organizations that want Record Compare buttons directly on selected Salesforce record pages can create object-specific Quick Actions using the Lightning Web Components included with Record Compare — recordCompareRecordAction for Compare Records, and recordCompareRelatedAction for Compare Related Records.

  1. Open Setup → Object Manager.
  2. Select the desired object.
  3. Open Buttons, Links, and Actions.
  4. Create a New Action using the appropriate Record Compare Lightning Web Component.
  5. Give the action a customer-facing label, such as Compare Records or Compare Related Records.
  6. Add the action to the appropriate record-page action configuration or page layout used by your organization.
Record Compare intentionally does not install object-specific Quick Actions or modify your existing page layouts. Your administrator decides which objects, if any, should receive them — repeat this configuration only where direct record-page access is desired.

Access, security & administration.

Access & security

  • Read-only — Record Compare does not edit the records being compared
  • Respects existing object permissions and field-level security
  • Respects record sharing, visibility, and access rules
  • Only displays data already available to the running user

Administration

  • Who receives the Record Compare permission set
  • Which Lightning apps include the Utility
  • Whether the Record Compare tab is added to navigation
  • Whether optional Quick Actions are configured, and where

No Salesforce CLI, VS Code, or Metadata API deployment is required for standard installation.

Frequently asked questions.

Record Compare is a Salesforce-native utility that allows users to compare Salesforce records and related records side by side without exporting the data or leaving Salesforce.
There are three options:
  • Utility Bar — the recommended contextual experience.
  • Record Compare workspace — the full comparison experience available from the dedicated Salesforce tab.
  • Record-page Quick Actions — optional actions your Salesforce administrator can configure on selected objects.
No. Record Compare is a read-only comparison utility. It does not edit the records being compared.
No. Record Compare respects the running user's existing Salesforce permissions, field-level security, record access, and sharing rules. Installing Record Compare does not grant additional access to your organization's Salesforce data.
For most organizations, we recommend the Toolkyt Record Compare permission set plus the Record Compare Utility Bar. The recommended Utility panel size is 700 × 550 px. The dedicated Record Compare workspace remains available for full-page comparisons.
Only if you want users to have the recommended contextual Record Compare experience. A Salesforce administrator adds Record Compare to the Utility Bar of each Lightning app where it should be available.
Utility Bar configuration is app-specific in Salesforce. Adding Record Compare to one Lightning app does not automatically add it to every other app. An administrator can add it to additional apps through Setup → App Manager.
Compare Records uses the current Salesforce record as the starting point and allows the user to select another eligible record for side-by-side comparison.
Compare Related Records allows users to select an available relationship from the current record and compare two eligible related records. Available relationships and records depend on the current Salesforce context and the user's access.
It opens the full Record Compare workspace. When launched from the Record Compare Utility, the Utility automatically minimizes so the full workspace can be used.
Yes. Users can open the dedicated Record Compare workspace and use Object → Record 1 → Record 2 → Compare. No Utility Bar configuration is required for this workflow.
No. Quick Actions are an optional convenience for organizations that want Compare Records or Compare Related Records directly on selected Salesforce record pages.
Salesforce Quick Actions are object-specific, while Record Compare is designed as a reusable utility across eligible Salesforce objects. Rather than modifying customer objects or page layouts during installation, Record Compare provides reusable Lightning components — your administrator decides which objects, if any, should receive optional Quick Actions.
Yes, where the Salesforce object and Record Compare functionality are compatible. Your administrator creates the action on the desired object using the packaged Record Compare Lightning component.
No. Record Compare does not automatically modify your existing Lightning record pages or install object-specific Quick Actions. Administrators retain control over where optional actions appear.
No. Record Compare supports common Salesforce field types used for meaningful side-by-side comparison, but not every field type is eligible. Record Compare also respects field-level security, so fields unavailable to the running user are not exposed.
Record Compare does not perform currency conversion. Currency values are compared within the currency context available for the records. Values that cannot be meaningfully compared are identified as Not Comparable rather than converted.
Record Compare may identify fields as:
  • Same — both records contain equivalent values.
  • Different — the values differ.
  • Record 1 Only — only Record 1 contains a value.
  • Record 2 Only — only Record 2 contains a value.
  • Both Blank — neither record contains a value.
  • Not Comparable — the values cannot be meaningfully compared by Record Compare.
No additional Toolkyt configuration, Salesforce CLI, VS Code, or Metadata API deployment is required for normal installation and use.
Assign it to users who should be able to use Record Compare. The permission set enables access to Record Compare itself; it does not expand the user's underlying Salesforce data permissions.
Go to Setup → Installed Packages → Record Compare. The current released version covered by this guide is 1.2.0.2.
The Record Compare Utility Bar and Record Compare Lightning record-page Quick Actions are designed for Salesforce Lightning Experience on desktop. These access methods are not supported in the Salesforce mobile app.
